Listed in its entirety as a historic monument, it preserves the remains of its 12th-century walls, part of a keep and beautiful medieval façades. Its name, of Celtic origin, means ‘three streams’. Long shared between the Archbishop of Lyon and Savigny Abbey, the village owes its keep in particular to Archbishop Jean de Belles Mains.

Tourist attractions to discover:

The castle and the patrol path

At the top of the old village stand the ruins of the former Château de Ternand, built in the 12th century by the archbishops of Lyon. Although partially in ruins, the keep and ramparts bear witness to the village’s fortified past.

The rampart walk along the old fortifications allows you to walk around the old town and offers spectacular views of the Azergues valley and the surrounding hills. It is an ideal place to learn about medieval history and enjoy remarkable views of the Beaujolais region.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church and crypte

In the heart of the village stands the Church of Saint John the Baptist. Some parts date back to the Middle Ages, with a 15th-century porch typical of buildings from that period.

Beneath the church, the crypt known as ‘Saint-Benoît’ contains ancient frescoes, offering a fascinating glimpse into the local religious history. The church is a must-see for anyone wishing to discover the religious heritage of Ternand.

Old houses

As you stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town, you will discover many old houses, some dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Mullioned windows, old wooden doors, ironwork and vaulted ceilings are just some of the details that tell the story of the daily life of the inhabitants over the centuries.

The buildings often use local stone, sometimes white marble, adding a geological and aesthetic dimension to the visit. These houses and narrow streets give the village an authentic and picturesque atmosphere.

Why to visit Ternand ?

Ternand is a perfect example of a medieval hilltop village in the Beaujolais region. With its ruined castle, ramparts, ancient church, historic houses and panoramic views over the Azergues valley, it offers a comprehensive and authentic visitor experience.

Whether you are passionate about history, love old buildings, or are simply looking for a getaway in the heart of nature, Ternand is well worth a visit. The village harmoniously combines medieval heritage, traditional architecture, and natural beauty for an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Beaujolais region.

For more information, download our ‘Visit Beaujolais’ app, available on the App Store and Android.

A medieval fortified village perched on a rocky promontory, Ternand overlooks the Azergues valley and charms visitors with its unspoilt character.
