A medieval fortified village perched on a rocky promontory, Ternand overlooks the Azergues valley and charms visitors with its unspoilt character. Listed in its entirety as a historic monument, it preserves the remains of its 12th-century walls, part of a keep and beautiful medieval fa\u00e7ades. Its name, of Celtic origin, means \u2018three streams\u2019. Long shared between the Archbishop of Lyon and Savigny Abbey, the village owes its keep in particular to Archbishop Jean de Belles Mains.<\/p>\n\n

The castle and the patrol path<\/p>\n\n

At the top of the old village stand the ruins of the former Ch\u00e2teau de Ternand, built in the 12th century by the archbishops of Lyon. Although partially in ruins, the keep and ramparts bear witness to the village’s fortified past.<\/p>\n\n

The rampart walk along the old fortifications allows you to walk around the old town and offers spectacular views of the Azergues valley and the surrounding hills. It is an ideal place to learn about medieval history and enjoy remarkable views of the Beaujolais region.<\/p>\n\n

Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church and crypte<\/p>\n\n

In the heart of the village stands the Church of Saint John the Baptist. Some parts date back to the Middle Ages, with a 15th-century porch typical of buildings from that period.<\/p>\n\n
